Profession: Actress
From tough-skinned "Pink Lady" Rizzo in 1978's "Grease" to open-hearted society wife Ouisa in 1993's "Six Degrees of Separation," Channing has infused dozens of roles with fiery intelligence, not least her character on "West Wing," first lady Abigail Bartlet. "(Series creator) Aaron (Sorkin) has really developed somebody that's intriguing to play, and people seem to like to watch," she says. "It's great to be playing this mature, rather sexy, multifaceted woman." Channing characterizes her arrangement on the series -- which grants her freedom to do other projects -- as "very unusual," but it allows her to pursue roles in a range of upcoming feature films, including the James Ivory-directed "Le Divorce," Woody Allen's "Anything Else" and Stephen Fry's "Bright Young Things," an adaptation of the Evelyn Waugh novel "Vile Bodies." All three of those projects are set to hit theaters this year.
