At the age of 14, Maria won the title of Miss Teenager of the World followed by Miss Venenzuela at the age of 18. With a successful modeling career, she combined modeling with acting and began making TV commercials. Eventually Maria moved her way up to movies and starred in four Venezuelan films and in ten Spanish language soap operas. In 1982 she made her move to the US where she made her debut in her first English language movie titled Fear City (1984). Even though she had a small role in the movie, it gave her leverage to get ahead and assume bigger roles in other movies such as Moscow Hudson (1986), Running Man (1987), House of Spirits (1993) and Caught (1995). Maria became the first South American woman to star on Broadway when she earned the role of Aurora/Spider Woman in Kiss of the Spider Woman.
