Although Hunter's single greatest claim to fame is her Oscar-winning embodiment of mute immigrant mother Ada McGrath in Jane Campion's The Piano (1993), her trump card as an actress is versatility. Whether she's playing a comically hyperactive, baby-snatching cop (Raising Arizona) or a twisted sexpot (Crash), Hunter steals almost every scene she's in. In her latest role in the critically-acclaimed Thirteen, Hunter plays Melanie, a desperate mother struggling to understand her experimental adolescent daughter (the remarkable Evan Rachel Wood) and straighten her out. Yet another challenge met for the gifted actress.
