From the start of her film career--1977's Saturday Night Fever--Drescher has worked hard to make memorable characters out of small parts, often stealing big chunks of movies with a few deft strokes. (This Is Spinal Tap, Cadillac Man and Jack are prime examples.) Her onscreen performances, however, are just a partial indication of Drescher's abilities. She has helped create, write and star in The Nanny, a hit sitcom now in its fourth season on CBS. She has also written a bestselling autobiography, Enter Whining, which comes out in paperback this month. Now, Drescher is making movies of her own. The Beautician and the Beast, in which she plays the sassy, outer-borough teacher of an Eastern European dictator's children, was, like The Nanny, conceived and executive produced by Drescher and her husband, Peter Marc Jacobson.
