Cher left home at the age of 16 to pursue an acting career and her chances of obtaining her high school diploma. Cher and Sonny became friends in 1963 when they first met in a coffee shop. Before they came out with their big hit "I Got You Babe" they had many ill-fated attempts, performing at places like bowling alleys under different names. Before getting married in 1969, Cher and Sonny put out one more hit "The Beat Goes On" in 1967. After their last hit they both went downhill and came back in the spot light when CBS made them an offer they couldn't refuse. By 1979 the show was cancelled and Cher had divorced her second husband Allman. Cher soon took an acting role in Silkwood which won her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Finally making her comeback Cher fell right back down again. In the late 80's she made another comeback with two hits "If I Could turn Back Time" and "Heart of Stone". Her chronic fatigue led her to slow down again, but with time to rest she released a hit album in 1998 "Believe". Since Cher has been active in the Gay community as well as causes such as AIDS, gay rights and the Children's Craniofacial Association.
